Laura Hamblin
Senior Document Control Manager, for Mott MacDonald in the United Kingdom
Can you tell us a bit about you?
My name is Laura. I am 45 years old, married and have three sons aged 23, 18 and 4. I live in Hampshire in the UK, and I enjoy days out with my children and husband.
I also enjoy gardening, particularly growing my own fruit and vegetables, and experimenting with what I can grow in my garden each year.
What is your current role?
I am a Senior Document Control Manager at Mott MacDonald.
Mott MacDonald is a global, employee-owned engineering, management, and development consultancy. I manage the Document Control for one portfolio of works for a client within the defence sector. Mott MacDonald plans, designs, delivers and maintains the transport, energy, water, defence and security, and buildings infrastructure that is integral to people’s daily lives.
Can you describe your professional experience?
I started my professional career in life and pensions, working for Prudential and Winterthur Life.
After I had my first son, I took a break from my career and worked part-time doing various roles that enabled me to stay home more.
After the birth of my second son, I returned to work full-time and started as a document controller. I was with the company for eight years and worked my way up to head of function. I later became a Regional Compliance Manager for Amazon.
When I fell pregnant with my third son, I decided the travel was too much and was fortunate to get offered a position with Mott MacDonald.
18 years later, I still love my job as much as the first day I started all those years ago.
Which Consepsys course did you attend and when?
I attended the Certified Document Controller course in November 2024. I then went on to attend the Certified Lead Document Controller course in December 2025.
What did you think about the course? How did it help you in your current role and career development?
I really enjoyed both courses that I attended. The instructors have great examples that bring the content to life. The certified document controller course reinforced that everything I was doing on the projects was in line with best practice. There were elements of the course that enabled me to develop the rest of the team that I was working with and improve the processes that had been in place for over four years.
After completing the second course, I felt fully equipped to deal with any request that the projects might have. I now feel able to provide accurate costs and timeframes to complete a task. On top of this, I have significantly developed my communication skills/techniques and established how to set clear objectives and directions for my team. By implementing these new skill sets, I will be better positioned to introduce efficiencies for the projects I support.
